Founder of RDG Companies

For more than 55 years, John Rhodes was an active mortgage banker, real estate developer, property manager, and investor throughout central Pennsylvania with the primary market area covering Harrisburg, Lancaster, York, and State College, PA.

Graduating from The Pennsylvania State University in 1962 with a degree in Finance and Real Estate, Mr. Rhodes received his Real Estate finance training from First Pennsylvania Bank in Philadelphia. In 1967, his entrepreneurial passion led to the formation of Osler & Rhodes Mortgage Company. This new company performed as a Mortgage Loan Correspondent for high profile companies including John Hancock Life Insurance Company and Mellon Bank, N.A. in Central Pennsylvania. Other financial institutions, including First Pennsylvania Bank, looked to Osler & Rhodes to provide mortgage loans. The current business structure of RDG is an outgrowth of these activities.

Commonwealth National Mortgage Company, (CNMC) was formed in 1974 as a commercial real estate and construction lender to serve Central Pennsylvania. Commonwealth National Bank was the primary funding source; the bank acquired the company in 1986. CNMC closed in excess of 800 loans with a current value exceeding $2.5 billion. It also sold loans or participations to over 60 financial institutions. Loan types consisted of nursing homes/retirement communities, office buildings, warehouse and industrial buildings, apartment complexes, and residential sub-divisions.
