Penn State Community Health Center
Long-term projects lead to long-term successful relationships.
Over a 15-year span, we have completed 14 medical buildings for Penn State Hershey, and we are now working on the 15th building. The Community Health Centers came about because of Penn State Hershey Medical Center’s status as a teaching hospital. Unlike other hospitals that get referrals from private practices, Hershey did not have what is termed in the medical profession a “feeder system” since their employed physicians worked within the medical center.
Penn State Hershey determined that the Community Health Centers would be that “feeder system.” Together with Penn State’s Gary Shultz, we created a plan where Rhodes Development Group would develop and manage the buildings. Three years after the completion of each building, Penn State would have the option to buy the properties at a pre-agreed price. We avoided the much higher prevailing wage, allowing for tremendous savings on the projects. To date, Penn State has purchased seven of the buildings from Rhodes Development Group.
The Community Centers were designed to be highly functional, yet not elaborate. You’ll recognize them by their “Penn State Blue” roofs. Responding to the changing healthcare environment, interiors were designed for maximum time efficiency for nurses and physicians to deliver care to their patients.
